I am trying to reconcile bank statements from previous months, last payroll officer messed up with payroll and underpayed staff. She then fixed the paychecks in quickbooks and issued staff bank cheques for remaining amounts. Now my problem is to reconcile bank statements for that week as quicbooks is showing correct payroll expense at say 20000( random figures), she payed out of bank 17000 and remaining cheques were issued for remaining 3000 which were cashed 1-2 weeks after.

I have just started this role and trying to figure out the way to reconcile bank statements. Any help will be appreciated.

I would suggest completing the reconcilation up to the date the payroll was underpaid.  Then reconcile the bank account for the 2 weeks or so that includes the correction to the payroll, it should then all work itself out and reconcile for you. 

From then on assuming everything is fine, you can reconcile as often or little as you like.
