How to fix weird tax codes: "INP-P" etc.?
« on: February 24, 2011, 01:38:37 PM »

Hi all,

I have running Quickbooks Pro 2010-11 for a year or so.

I am just finalizing my BAS.

I always check the "Tax Summary Report" to see if there are any anomalies.

The latest report has 2 columns I have not seen before, with headings "Gross INP-P" and "Gross NCF-S".

My Tax Code list does not have any codes "INP-P" or "NCF-S".

I have created a report that shows a dozen or so transactions with those tax codes.
But opening them for editing does not show any of these Tax Codes.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards,
Leigh

Hi Leigh,

This is because you have used the tax codes incorrectly.

eg. INP-P means you have used this code in a purchase - INP is a sales code (and you would probably never use INP anyway).

NCF-S means you have used this in a sale. NCF is a purchase code.

As QuickBooks QBi won't let you use these incorrectly (except in a journal), it is likely that you have a 'default code' in one of your ITEMS or in one of your LEDGER ACCOUNTS that is incorrect (this will override the QuickBooks check on this), so please review.

To fix, go Lists > Tax Item List

Right-click the offending code, run a report for all dates, drill down into the transaction and change (eg, NCF in a sale should be FRE, and INP in a purchase should be NCI.

NB. Re-check all previous BAS reports as these changes may effect some of your data.

Hope that helps,

Jason

Hi Jason,

Your suggestions got the problem sorted.

Many thanks.

Just for the benefit of any one else that reads this Topic:

I needed to check the box "Include Inactive" at the bottom of the sceen.

No problem Leigh.

Yes - that is correct - if you can't see the offending tax item then it is probably just in-active. Sorry about that - I have been teaching QuickBooks for so long that making all items active is just "automatic" for me  Smiley

Thanks again for clarifying for others.

Cheers,
Jason
